It’s been a rough year for the Pittsburgh Pirates offense.

The team ranks last in Major League Baseball in runs (417), home runs (83), slugging percentage (.347) and OPS (.651). The offensive struggles are the main reason the Pirates are in last place in the National League Central and doomed for yet another losing season.

The Pirates are already getting extended looks at several younger players currently on the active roster, including Liover Peguero, Jared Triolo and Jack Suwinski. But there are a handful of players currently with Triple-A Indianapolis who also might be worthy of receiving an opportunity with the big-league club.

OF/1B Billy Cook

Cook made his MLB debut with the Pirates last season and appeared in three games earlier this season. He should probably add to that total.

The 26-year-old is considered the team’s No. 21 prospect by MLB Pipeline. In 94 games this season with Triple-A Indianapolis, Cook carries a .248/.323/.384 with 17 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 46 RBI and 13 steals.

However, Cook was hit by a pitch on Aug. 3 and has not appeared in a game since. Something to monitor.

INF Cam Devanney

Devanney was acquired by the Pirates in the deal that sent Adam Frazier to the Kansas City Royals.

In 17 games with Indianapolis since the trade, the 28-year-old has a .380 on-base percentage and a .753 OPS with four doubles, a homer and five RBI. He was up with the Royals earlier this season but is still awaiting his MLB debut.

Devanney has the ability to play shortstop and can play other infield positions too.

C/1B Rafael Flores

Flores is one of the top prospects the Pirates got at the trade deadline last month. He was acquired from the New York Yankees as part of a three-player return for David Bednar.

The 24-year-old has only played 15 games at Triple-A this year, so he will need some more seasoning. But he was described as someone who was close to being big-league ready at the time of the trade, and it might be worth getting his feet wet with the Pirates by the end of the year in hopes of playing a large role next season.

INF Ronny Simon

Simon totaled 19 games with the Miami Marlins this season and hit .234 with a .327 on-base percentage before he was designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the Pirates on June 2.

The 25-year-old has played well in Indianapolis since joining the organization. In 49 games, Simon has slashed .299/.389/.454 with nine doubles, seven home runs, 30 RBI and 24 stolen bases.

INF/OF Nick Yorke

Like Cook, Yorke made his MLB debut late last season with the Pirates. The former first-round pick was acquired at last year’s trade deadline from the Boston Red Sox for Quinn Priester.

In 83 games with Indianapolis on the year, Yorke is hitting .273 with a .738 OPS, 14 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 48 RBI and 12 steals. He also offers defensive versatility.

Unlike Cook, Yorke hasn’t been up with the Pirates yet this season.
