Padres minor league affiliates went 1-5 on Friday.

Here is our daily recap of games played.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 10-9) 51-50 on the season

Nate Mondou – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Four RBI

Yonathan Perlaza – 2-for-3, RBI Double, Two Runs Scored

Jackson Wolf – 3.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 0 K (62 pitches – 39 strikes)

In a classic PCL barn-burner, El Paso and OKC combined for 19 runs, seven homers, and 27 hits. Jackson Wolf pitched 3.1 innings for the Chihuahuas, but was tagged for a season-high FIVE home runs. Wolf did not record a strikeout in the game, as the altitude meant balls were flying. Raul Brito performed valiantly in 2.2 innings of relief, striking out two while allowing only two runs. Harold Chirino and Alek Jacob pitched scoreless baseball in relief as well. Bryan Hoeing allowed one run in 1.1 innings, departing after only two batters faced due to what looked to be a hamstring injury.

Offensively, El Paso did not rely on the long ball like their opponents. The Chihuahuas instead relied on putting the ball in play. Nate Mondou had two singles and drove in four of the Chihuahuas’ nine runs. Mason McCoy and Tim Locastro launched home runs in the loss. Yonathan Perlaza doubled to score a run in the game, finishing with two hits and three walks drawn. Will Wagner also had two hits and three walks, as the Chihuahuas drew 12 walks as a team. Rodolfo Duran’s stretch of six consecutive multi-hit games ended, albeit with a 1-for-4 showing. Tyler Wade, back with the Chihuahuas, drove in two runs out of the leadoff spot.

El Paso made a pair of roster moves prior to the game. Tirso Ornelas was activated from the injured list; he had been out for seven weeks with plantar fasciitis. To make way for Ornelas and Wade on the active roster, Ripken Reyes was reassigned to Double-A San Antonio, while fellow infielder Mike Brosseau was released.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 2-0 vs Springfield) (55-51 on the season)

Marcos Castanon – 1-for-3, Single, Walk

Wyatt Hoffman – 1-for-2, Single, Walk

Eric Yost – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 4 K (89 pitches – 54 strikes)

Right-hander Eric Yost performed admirably in his second Double-A start, tossing six innings of two-run baseball. Yost struck out four while walking three, but pitched at least six full innings for the fifth time this season. The right-hander was charged with two runs, one being unearned. In his last four starts, the former Northeastern Huskie has pitched to a 2.14 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 21 innings. Andrew Moore delivered and then some in relief, striking out three in two innings of work. Fellow fireballer Stephen Jones tossed a scoreless ninth in the loss. The Missions’ lineup had a down day at the plate, only registering four hits all game. It was a struggle against Cardinals No. 19 prospect (and former USD Torero) Brycen Mautz, who struck out ten in six innings. Two Missions hits came in the eighth inning, and Ripken Reyes was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. However, Francisco Acuna lined out to end the threat, stranding the tying run in scoring position. Albert Fabian led off the ninth with a base hit to bring the tying run to the plate, but with one out, Anthony Vilar hit into a game-ending double play.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-5 vs South Bend) (50-55 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Lamar King Jr – 2-for-5, Two Singles

Isaiah Lowe – 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K (87 pitches – 56 strikes)

Fort Wayne and South Bend went into the eighth inning tied at four apiece, but the Cubs pulled away with a four-run bottom of the eighth to win 8-5. The TinCaps lineup had production from head to toe, with eight of nine starters reaching base at least once. Braedon Karpathios opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third inning. After the Cubs tied the game, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brendan Durfee scored Kasen Wells to give the ‘Caps a 2-1 lead. Though they would fall behind 4-2, Fort Wayne rallied to tie the game in the seventh. Jonathan Vastine walked and stole second, coming in to score on a single off the bat of Kai Roberts. Roberts made it to second on a fielding error by left fielder Edgar Alvarez, and stole third base to set up a game-tying sacrifice fly by Ryan Jackson. Fort Wayne threatened to take the lead in the eighth, but a questionable called third strike to Kai Roberts with two on and two outs threw cold water on the TinCaps’ rally.

On the mound, Isaiah Lowe grinded through five innings. Lowe allowed four runs on five hits, recording four strikeouts. Lowe had an even 5-5 split on groundouts and flyouts, but also walked three batters. After this start, Lowe set a career-high in walks (47) with only 64 strikeouts in 79.2 innings this season. Bodi Rascon came on in relief and cruised in the sixth and seventh innings. The eighth was a different story, as a fielding error, walk, and bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. Leonel Espinoza grounded a single up the middle to score two runs, giving the Cubs a 6-4 lead. After a groundout, Rascon was relieved by Nick Wissman. Wissman gave up a sac fly and two singles to score two inherited runners, ending the frame with Fort Wayne down 8-4. With two on and one out, Kasen Wells grounded out to score Braedon Karpathios, but Cubs pitcher Marino Santy struck out Zach Evans swinging to end the game.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 9-3 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (48-58 on the season)

Alex McCoy – 2-for-4, Home Run, Triple, Two RBI

Yoiber Ocopio – 1-for-3, RBI Double

Maikel Miralles – 3 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 3 K (62 pitches – 32 strikes)

Storm pitching struck out ten batters in a 9-3 loss to the Quakes, but also issued 11 walks. Maikel Miralles allowed six runs on five hits in three-plus innings, striking out three batters. The right-hander walked four batters, constantly navigating through base traffic. Braian Salazar also walked four batters, albeit in 1.1 innings. Salazar struck out three but was charged with two runs. Bernard Jose allowed an unearned run in 1.2 innings, and Jordan Valenzuela made his third Single-A appearance, striking out three in two innings.

The Storm’s offense lacked punch against Quakes pitching until the late innings. Lake Elsinore did not get a base hit until Cardell Thibodeaux’s sixth-inning single. Despite loading the bases in said frame, Ryan Wideman and Jorge Quintana were punched out back to back to end the threat. Yoiber Ocopio got the Storm on the board in the seventh with an RBI double to score Alex McCoy, who had tripled earlier in the frame. It wasn’t McCoy’s last contribution, as the right-handed slugger launched a two-run homer in the ninth.

DSL Padres Gold (Won 3-2 vs DSL Red Sox Red) (31-16 on the season)

Eduarlin Tejeda – 2-for-3, Two-RBI Triple

Abraham Bastidas – 1-for-1, RBI Single, Two Walks

Raymel Belliard – 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Raymel Belliard threw four scoreless innings in a 3-2 win over the DSL Red Sox Red. Belliard struck out three while walking none, and has now been scoreless in four of ten starts this season. Edwyn Hernandez allowed two runs in one inning of work, but earned the win after the lineup rallied for three. Miguel Alvarez earned the two-inning save with two strikeouts, ending a sixth inning Red Sox rally with a double play and strikeout combo. Abraham Bastidas put the team on the board with an RBI single with two runners on. Bastidas and Moises Valdez were on second and third for Eduarlin Tejeda, who tripled to give the Padres Gold a 3-2 lead. Jhoan De La Cruz had one hit in three at-bats in the win. With the win, the Padres Gold took possession of first place in the DSL Northwest.

DSL Padres Brown (Lost 5-4 vs DSL LAD Bautista) (18-29 on the season)

Cristian Benavides – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Endy Rios – 1-for-3, RBI Single

Ariel Dilone – 2.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R (3 ER), 5 BB, 1 K

The Padres Brown and LAD Bautista were at a 4-4 stalemate before a sixth-inning homer by LAD’s Allen Ajoti gave the home team a 5-4 lead that would be final. Ariel Dilone started for the Padres Brown, pitching 2.1 innings. Dilone walked five and struck out one, allowing four runs. Cristian Navarro pitched 3.2 innings in relief, striking out one but allowing the go-ahead run in a tough-luck loss. Cristian Benavides had two singles and an RBI, and Tom Guerrero drove in a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Endy Rios had a single to score Benavides in the fifth inning, and Rios came in to score on a strikeout+wild pitch combo.
