SAN DIEGO — Instant reactions from the Red Sox‘ 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Saturday:
1) The Red Sox dropped to 65-53 overall and 26-31 on the road. The Padres improved to 65-52.

2) Ramón Laureano’s RBI single in the 10th on the first pitch he saw from Garrett Whitlock after an intentional walk to Ryan O’Hearn gave the Padres a walkoff win.
The Red Sox had failed to score in 10th inning. With the automatic runner at second base, David Hamilton struck out when he fouled off a bunt attempt. Pinch hitter Romy Gonzalez flied out to center field. Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out after an intentional walk to Wilyer Abreu.
3) Roman Anthony was the ninth inning hero after Rafaela beat out an infield single to third base against closer Robert Suárez. Rafaela stole second and then scored when Anthony hit a ground-rule double to left-center field with one out, tying it 4-4. Anthony’s opposite field hit went 103.4 mph off the bat and 348 feet.
4) Boston starter Lucas Giolito couldn’t find the strike zone in the fifth inning. With two outs, he walked four straight batters, including forcing in the tying and go-ahead runs as Boston fell behind 4-3. Giolito allowed four runs, five hits and six walks while striking out just one in 4 ⅔ innings.

5) Pinch runner David Hamilton initially was ruled safe on a steal attempt of second base in the eighth inning with no outs after Masataka Yoshida’s leadoff single. But the Padres challenged and the call got overturned. A replay showed Hamilton’s hand came slightly off the bag after he initially slid in safely. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts held the tag.
6) Alex Bregman’s alert base running led to two runs and a 3-1 Boston lead in the third inning. With Bregman at third base and Jarren Duran at first base, Trevor Story grounded to reliever Wandy Peralta. Bregman got caught between home and third but he stayed in the rundown long enough to allow Duran to reach third base and Story to make it to second base.
The rundown strategy worked as both Duran and Story eventually scored. Duran came home on a balk. Masataka Yoshida drove in Story on a fielder’s choice.
7) The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Bregman doubled with one out. Duran followed with an RBI single on a bloop into center field. Bregman had three hits, including two doubles.

8) Former Red Sox star Xander Bogaerts tied the game in the second inning with a 358-foot solo home run to left field. Bogaerts reached outside the strike zone to connect on a changeup from Giolito and hit it only 92.3 mph off the bat.
Bogaerts also delivered an RBI single in the third inning to cut the Padres’ deficit to 3-2.
9) Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu’s sliding catch in the third saved a run. He made the play on Jackson Merrill’s 286-foot, 94.1 mph sinking line drive.
10) Second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela made a diving play to his left on Ramón Laureano’s ground ball that left his bat at 106.5 mph. First baseman Abraham Toro also made a diving play to his left on Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 107.4 mph groundout in the sixth inning.

11) The Red Sox squandered an opportunity to extend their 1-0 lead in the second inning. They loaded the bases with one out but Wong grounded into a force-out and Anthony struck out swinging.
12) The three-game series finale is Sunday at 4:10 p.m., eastern. Righty Brayan Bello (8-5, 3.03 ERA) will start for Boston opposite Padres righty Dylan Cease (4-10, 4.60 ERA).
