Auburn baseball’s Butch Thompson recaps NC State win, NCAA Regional title
Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson recaps the Tigers’ 11-1 NCAA Regional win over North Carolina State on Sunday, June 1, at Plainsman Park.
The furious chase for one of the eight spots in Omaha, Nebraska for the 2025 College World Series is now down to 16 teams.
What began as a 64-team NCAA tournament field last week has been quartered after an eventful regional round in which seven of the top 16 national seeds were knocked out, including No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Texas.
The 16 remaining teams will now take part in the super regionals, in which there will be eight different best-of-three series. The winner of each of those will advance to the CWS, where their national championship dreams will be put to the test on the sport’s biggest stage.
Though the SEC, the home of the past five NCAA champions, dominated much of the regular season and claimed eight of the 16 national seeds, it’s the ACC that has had the most success thus far in the tournament. Of the 16 super regional participants, five are from the ACC (the SEC isn’t far behind, with four).
