Jason Adam came on to pitch for the San Diego Padres in the top of the 10th inning against the Boston Red Sox with the automatic runner at second base and the game tied, 4-4. Adam walked off the mound without allowing the runner to reach third base and the game still tied.
The Padres took their turn with the automatic runner in the bottom of the 10th inning. Ryan O’Hearn was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second. Ramon Laureano chopped the first pitch he saw over the Red Sox third baseman and into left field, which allowed Xander Bogaerts to score to give San Diego a 5-4 walk-off win over the Boston at Petco Park, Saturday.
The Padres showed patience at the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, and it resulted in four walks and two runs scored to give them a 4-3 lead over the Red Sox. The San Diego bullpen took over and held the lead until the top of the ninth inning.
Fernando Tatis Jr. started the bottom of the fifth with a single. Luis Arraez grounded out and Tatis Jr. advanced to second base. Manny Machado flied out for the second out of the inning and then Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito issued walks to Jackson Merrill, Bogaerts and O’Hearn to tie the game, 3-3. Laureano worked a fourth consecutive walk off Giolito and San Diego took a 4-3 lead.
Jermemiah Estrada, who came on in the fifth, faced three batters and recorded three outs. He remained on the mound in the sixth inning and recorded strikeouts of Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela and Connor Wong.
Adrian Morejon took over for Estrada in the seventh inning. He recorded a strikeout of Roman Anthony to open the frame, gave up a single to Alex Bregman and struck out Jarren Duran. Morejon gave way to Mason Miller to try to get the final out of the inning and he did just that with a strikeout of Trevor Story.
Miller allowed a single to Masataka Yoshida to start the eighth inning. David Hamilton came in to pinch-run for Yoshida and was thrown out trying to steal second. Miller struck out Abraham Toro and Abreu before turning the ball over to Robert Suarez in the ninth.
Suarez allowed a single Rafaela to start the inning and then struck out Wong. Anthony doubled to left-center field to tie the game, 4-4. Suarez got Bregman to fly out to foul territory in right. He intentionally walked Duran and struck out Story to end the top of the ninth inning.
Michael King’s return to the mound for the Padres was short lived. Not because of injury or ineffectiveness, but because he threw too many pitches. King threw 57 pitches in two-plus innings and allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The one strikeout by King was critical and kept San Diego from facing a potentially significant deficit. Boston had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the second inning. King faced the Red Sox leadoff man, Anthony, and got him to strikeout on a changeup with a full count to get out of the inning.
King was rewarded for his effort in the bottom of the second inning. Bogaerts led off the inning for the Padres with a solo home run to left field that tied the game, 1-1.
The Red Sox took the lead again in the top of the third. King started the inning and allowed a double to Bregman. He was replaced on the mound by Wandy Peralta.
Peralta allowed a single to Duran and Bregman moved to third base. Peralta then got Story to ground back to the pitchers mound. He threw too many pitches Machado at third base and Bregman was eventually forced out of the baseline for an out. He did remain in a pickle long enough to allow Duran to move to third base and Story to reach second base.
Peralta was called for a balk immediately following the first out of the inning and Duran scored from third to make the score, 2-1. Story advanced to third base. Masataka Yoshida grounded into a fielder’s choice and Story scored on a late throw to the plate to put Boston ahead 3-1. San Diego was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The Padres play the Red Sox for the final game of their series and the homestand, Sunday at 1:10 p.m.
