The Chicago White Sox have snapped their six-game losing streak, as they finished the series strong against the Cleveland Guardians with a 6-4 win after a stellar offensive day for the team.
The South Siders started the scoring early, and in a big way off of Guardians starter Slade Cecconi. After a leadoff single by Mike Tauchman, snapping an 0-10 streak, Lenyn Sosa wasted no time bringing both of them home, echoed by Nancy Faust on the organ as he rounded the bases to a 2-0 lead.
With two outs, Colson Montgomery started the home-run party back up, with one of the longest home runs you will see by ANY MLB player all season, plus a bat-flip to round it out.
The home run nearly hit the new Mark Buehrle statue on the concourse, marking the longest home run by a White Sox hitter this year, at 452 feet.
The Guardians threatened in the top of the third with runners on second and third and known Sox killer José RamÃrez at the plate, but luckily he lined out to end the inning and the threat.
The White Sox started the scoring again in the bottom of the third inning, this time with some clutch hitting. With one out Luis Robert Jr. reached on a single, and Montgomery walked. Curtis Mead delivered yet again with RISP, hitting an RBI single, advancing to second on the throw home for a 4-0 lead.
Kyle Teel wasted no time getting in on the action, pushing home another run on an RBI single to right for a 5-0 lead.
The Guardians picked up their first run of the ballgame against Davis Martin in the top of the fourth inning, as Kyle Manzardo clubbed a solo shot to right in the top of the fourth inning.
Kolby Allard replaced Cecconi to start the bottom of the fourth inning, who went just three innings with eight hits, five runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. Davis Martin pitching into the top of the sixth, where he let up a leadoff single to Gabriel Arias and ground-rule double to Angel Martinez. With runners now on second and third with nobody out, things got a bit tense. Martin was replaced by Brandon Eisert, who then had a one-out walk after a line out by C.J. Kayfus. Pinch-hitter David Fry replaced Austin Hedges at the plate, who wasted no time cutting the Guardians deficit down with a two-run double to left, making it 5-3.
The White Sox fought back, adding one more in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to another Lenyn Sosa RBI, this one a sacrifice fly after a Josh Rojas single, Mike Tauchman walk, and wild pitch by Matt Festa moved them over to second and third.
Jordan Leasure let up another home run to Manzardo in the top of the seventh inning, which would be his second of the game. Now at 6-4, the Guardians trailed by just two runs again.
Luckily things were smooth the rest of the way for the White Sox, and Grant Taylor was able to go 1-2-3 for the save in the ninth inning, as they closed this one out in orderly fashion. Overall, it was a great display of a mix of offense today, and The pitching held it down in a close game in the later innings.
Unfortunately the competition doesn’t get any easier now, as the first place (but struggling) Detroit Tigers come to town tomorrow to start a series. Game time will be at 6:40 p.m. CT, as Chris Paddack takes the mound against… TBD? We might be seeing more of those this season, as the rotation has been diminished. We will see you back here tomorrow night!
No Cold Cat today, polls in the new platform have been very wonky.
