More players were released as the Cubs make roster room for the incoming draftees. All three players released today were on the Complex League team.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were condemned by the St. Paul Saints (Twins), 3-2.

Starter Jordan Wicks lasted 4.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. One of the two runs was unearned. The other was a home run. Wicks struck out four and walked no one.

Ethan Roberts relieved Wicks and took the loss after surrendering one run on two hits over 1.1 innings. Roberts walked one and struck out one.

First baseman Jonathon Long came a double shy of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a triple and a solo home run in the sixth inning. The home run was Long’s 17th on the year. Long scored twice.

Shortstop Ben Cowles went 2 for 4 with a double.

Second baseman Nicky Lopez was also 2 for 4 with a double.

Right fielder Owen Caissie was 1 for 2 with two walks.

Rehabbing Miguel Amaya caught the entire game and went 0 for 3 with a walk. Usually when a rehabbing major leaguer plays an entire game in the field, they’re ready to be activated.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies cracked open the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers), 3-2.

Tyler Schlaffer started and got the win. Schlaffer went six innings and allowed just two runs on two hits. Both runs came on a home run to the third batter of the game. He settled down quite well after that. Schlaffer struck out six and walked one.

Brad Deppermann walked two in the ninth, but otherwise allowed no hits and no runs and got the save. Deppermann struck out one.

The Smokies tied and then took the lead in the fifth inning with two bases-loaded hit-by-pitches. Shortstop Jefferson Rojas got the first painful RBI and center fielder Brett Bateman got the second one. Rojas went 0 for 3 with the HBP and Bateman was 1 for 2 with a walk and the hit-by-pitch. Bateman also stole a base.

Second baseman Reivaj Garcia was 2 for 4 and scored once.

Right fielder Jaylen Palmer was 2 for 3 with a walk.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs beat the Ft. Wayne Tincaps (Padres), 4-2.

Yenrri Rojas dominated Ft. Wayne over the first five innings, allowing no runs and just three hits. He got the win after striking out six and walking no one.

Caleb Kilian gave up a two-run home run in the seventh inning in a rehab appearance. Kilian’s final line was two runs on two hits over two innings. He struck out one and walked no one.

Kenten Egbert pitched the final two innings, didn’t allow a run and got the save. Egbert allowed three hits, but he didn’t walk anyone and he struck out two.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez is off to a great start to August. Today he hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his fifth on the season. Hernandez went 3 for 4.
