Righty Luis Perales, who Baseball America ranked the Boston Red Sox’ No. 1 pitching prospect entering 2025, is throwing bullpens as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Perales underwent the procedure last June 27 after a strong start to the 2024 season. He posted a 2.94 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 56 strikeouts and 12 walks in nine starts (33 ⅔ innings) between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland before leaving a start June 8 due to elbow inflammation.
The 22-year-old from Venezuela throws hard, topping out at 99 mph last year.
Although he started 2025 ranked Boston’s No. 1 prospect, Baseball America has him No. 4 behind Payton Tolle, 2025 first round pick Kyson Witherspoon and Brandon Clarke in its latest rankings.
Boston signed Perales for only $75,000 as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in July 2019.
He is a member of Boston’s 40-man roster.
