The Dodgers on Monday acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Blue Jays for cash considerations.
Berroa, who was designated for assignment by Toronto last Wednesday, made his major league debut last season, going 7-for-37 with a double and eight walks, hitting .189/.333/.216.
The 25-year-old switch-hitter, signed by the Blue Jays as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic in 2016. He stole at least 40 bases in each of the last four seasons, including six steals in his limited major league time in 2024 plus 34 steals in 79 games for Triple-A Buffalo.
Berroa last season in Triple-A hit .281/.371/.454 with a 120 wRC+, but this season is down to just .195/.267/.234 with a 44 wRC+ and nine steals in 24 games in the minors. This year in Triple-A he’s split his outfield starts almost evenly, with eight starts in left field, seven in center, and six in right.
His role in the majors with Toronto might give a hint to a potential use by the Dodgers. Berroa batted only 45 times in his 28 games with the Blue Jays, and nine times he was used as a pinch-runner.
Berroa has 75 days of major league service time and is using his second option year this season. He was optioned to Triple-A during spring training this year, so hasn’t yet used one of the five in-season options allowed per player.
The Dodgers’ 40-man roster is now full. Berroa took the open spot vacated when pitcher Yoendrys Gómez was designated for assignment last week.
