ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Service’s 1-2 pitching punch of Kolby Jensen and Hunter Christian were nearly untouchable during their Alaska Legion Baseball State Championship run.
Jensen was named the tournament’s MVP, not allowing a single run in 11 1/3 innings while tossing 16 strikeouts, while Christian earned the Top Pitcher award after throwing 12 innings with a 1.17 ERA.
″Hunter Christian and Kolby Jensen, both of those guys had their freshman year at college, and they came back for us this year,” said Service baseball head coach Willie Paul. “At the state tournament they stepped up when we needed them too both on the mound and at the plate.”
Both brought their bats as well, as Jensen went 4-for-5 during the tournament, while Christian went 3-for-6, scoring four runs and coming up with an RBI in their 10-1 championship win and lifting each other at the plate when the other is on the mound.
“We’ve been best friends for years, I don’t even remember when, picking each other up,” Christian said of Jensen. “Obviously, I didn’t do my best, he comes in and pitches amazing, one-two combo going best we can.”
Jensen was cool, calm and collected in his championship outing, going six innings strong while sitting down seven batters.
“I felt good, just looked at it like a regular game, came in with confidence,” he said, “and that’s all it was.”
The pair capped off their summer in championship fashion.
“It was fun,” Jensen added. “I got my little brother, got to pitch to him a whole bunch so it was a really good time being out here with my friends.”
