ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane McClanahan will not return to action this year after all.
McClanahan, who hasn’t pitched in a major league game since Aug. 2, 2023, has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery and was trying to return to the mound this season.
On Monday, McClanahan underwent a procedure to clear a nerve issue in his left triceps.
McClanahan, 28, posted a 3.29 ERA and an 11-2 record in 21 starts during the 2023 campaign. The lefty picked up his second All-Star nod that season.
He did pitch during spring training this season but the nerve issue started in his last spring outing, which led to starts and stops during the rehab process that followed.
“(It’s not like the doctor is) sitting there saying, like, ‘He’s fixed,’” Rays Manager Kevin Cash told MLB.com. “That’s not the case. This is one step, and we’ll see how this goes, and hopefully we get good results. If we don’t, then we’ll let doctors decide what else is needed, if anything.”
