New Ulm’s Jace Schaefer scores a run during an amateur baseball exhibition game against Hanska Tuesday at Johnson Park.
NEW ULM — It was a tune-up game Tuesday night for both the Hanska Lakers and the New Ulm Brewers for their upcoming appearances in the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament and it turned into a great pitching performance for both teams.
Tate Becker went 8 1/3 innings and allowed one run on two hits as the Brewers edged Hanska 3-1 at Johnson Park.
Becker struck out eight and walked two.
Andrew Peters got the save for the Brewers.
Ethan Mixdorf took the loss for the Lakers, going four innings despite allowing just two runs on no hits.
Hanska took a 1-0 lead on Becker and the Brewers in the top of the third inning.
Mixdorf rapped a one-out single to right field and took third on an error on the play. He scored on a Sam Knowles sacrifice fly.
The Brewers plated two runs in the bottom of the inning when Lucas Suess and Jace Schaefer both walked to start the inning.
Suess scored on a fielders choice and an error on a Josh Seidl bunt before an Ayden Jensen sacrifice fly scored Schaefer.
The Brewers added a run in the bottom of the fifth off of reliever Connor Jones.
JT Hoffmann singled — the first Brewers hit of the game — and stole second. Peters walked before Jensen collected New Ulm’s second hit of the game on an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
Hanska threatened in the top of the ninth when Peters allowed two, two-out singles before ending the game on a flyout.
The Lakers will compete in the Class C state tournament on Saturday in a 1:30 p.m. first-round game against Hawley.
The Brewers will make their first appearance in the Class B state tournament two weekends from now after winning the District 8B tournament and drawing a first-round bye. On Aug. 24, the Brewers will meet the winner of the Plato-Princeton first-round game in Hutchinson.
