Mike Elias, general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, apologized recently and said that a lot had to go wrong for the team’s disappointing season (“Orioles’ Mike Elias apologizes for lost 2025 season: ‘A lot had to go wrong,’” Aug. 1). I appreciate that gesture and I have been one of the GM’s biggest critics. Everyone is entitled to make mistakes and he sure has made many since his hire to run this organization.

But as an experienced general manager in this league, Elias needs to provide an explanation as to why he would sign a player that has been on the disabled list more than a dozen times in his career prior to last off season’s signing (“Orioles outfielder Tyler O’Neill exits game vs. Phillies with injury,” Aug. 5). Now, he is been on the injured list several times already this year. In his wildest dreams, did Elias think the outcome would be any different?

That one he can’t apologize for, and the sad part is he signed him to a three-year contract. Just totally unacceptable and mind-blowing for that kind of mistake.
