TORONTO — The Chicago Cubs are giving an opportunity to their top prospect.
Lefty slugger Owen Caissie is being called up, sources confirmed to the Tribune, and the Canadian outfielder will join the team in Toronto for Thursday’s series finale.
The Cubs needed to make a move as catcher Miguel Amaya heads to the injured list after spraining his left ankle from an awkward step on first base during the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 4-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
With the trade deadline passed and roughly six weeks to go in the regular season, the Cubs are starting to prioritize having their best players on the big-league squad, something president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer indicated was on the horizon with future decisions.
“You have to balance development with the best 26 and there’s always going to be development concerns,” Hoyer said July 31. “You don’t want to take all your best prospects and sit them on the bench and let them not play much, but certainly that is going to be a focus as we go forward.”
Caissie has been on a tear at Triple-A Iowa. He’s seen an uptick in power in his second season with Iowa, posting a .292/.393/.573 slash line and a .966 OPS while tallying 26 doubles and 22 home runs in 92 games. Most impressively, Caissie cut down his strikeout rate over the course of the season. Since the start of July, Caissie’s K% is at 18.6% to complement a .336 average, .441 on-base percentage and 1.176 OPS in that 27-game span.
He has started 66 games in right field, 12 in left field and 11 as the designated hitter for Iowa this season.
