Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/first baseman Endy Rodríguez underwent ulnar nerve transposition surgery, Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk informed members of the media in Milwaukee, including Jose Negron of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

Rodríguez will miss the remainder of the 2025 season but is expected to return to full competition for spring training. The surgery was performed by Sr. Steve Shin and Dr. Neal ElAttrache at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

The Pirates placed the 25-year-old on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation on June 7 and transferred him to the 60-day IL six days later.

Rodríguez returned to the Pirates for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery during the 2023-24 offseason, which caused him to miss the majority of last season until he appeared in a handful of minor-league games at the end of the season. In 18 games with the Pirates this season, Rodríguez hit .173 with a .496 OPS, four doubles and a pair of RBI.

In 57 games as a rookie two years ago, Rodríguez slashed .220/.284/.328 with seven doubles, two triples, three home runs and 13 RBI.

The Pirates acquired Rodríguez in a three-way trade with the San Diego Padres and New York Mets in January 2021. After joining the organization, he was considered one of the Pirates’ top prospects, peaking as high as No. 23 on Baseball America’s 2023 preseason rankings.
