Crunch time has arrived in the MLB playoff races, and the NL Wild Card standings are tightening up.

The San Francisco Giants (59-62) have stumbled out of the All-Star break, dropping five straight games and 13 of their past 14 home games–their worst such stretch at home since 1940.

Chances of playing baseball in October are quickly fading for San Francisco, but there is still time before the NL Wild Card standings become final.

Here’s a current look at those NL Wild Card standings, and a glimpse at what lies ahead for the Giants with 41 regular-season games remaining.

NL Wild Card Standings

ESPN

San Francisco has dug itself into quite a hole in the NL Wild Card standings, but there is still a glimmer of hope regarding their hopes for Playoff baseball.

The Giants are 5.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot with 41 games to play, and they hold the fourth-easiest remaining strength of schedule in the National League.

Also slumping in the standings, the New York Mets–who have dropped eight of their past ten games–continue to show vulnerability on the diamond and have left the door open for teams like Cincinnati, St. Louis, Arizona, San Francisco, and Miami.

Of course, it’s up to the Giants to win the games in front of them, regardless of the strength of the schedule. The time is now for San Francisco to strike, especially during the Mets’ slide.

One five-game winning streak can change a lot. It’s up to the Giants to make that happen–not the teams around them.

Jake Cronenworth and Fernando Tatis Jr. contributed two-RBI singles to a seven-run second inning, Nick Pivetta pitched into the seventh for his 12th win of the year, and the San Diego Padres completed a three-game road sweep of the San Francisco Giants with an 11-1 pounding on Wednesday afternoon.

Ramon Laureano had a home run among three hits, while Ryan O’Hearn joined Cronenworth and Tatis with two hits apiece for the Padres, who temporarily took over sole possession of first place in the National League West, pending the Los Angeles Dodgers’ later game against the Los Angeles Angels.
