Rockies Report, Game 121:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. put the Rockies in a 3-0 hole in the top of the first inning with a one-out, two-on, 416-foot blast off Bradley Blalock, and matters only exacerbated from their as the Arizona Diamondbacks cruised to an 8-2 rout of Colorado in a series-opening game in front of an announced crowd of 23,045 at Coors Field on Thursday night.

Arizona catcher Jose Herrera added to the damage with a two-run home run in the second inning, and RBI base hits from Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte stretched the Diamondbacks’ lead to 7-0 before the Rox could finally respond in the fifth inning, by which point they could barely muster any kind of answer.

Colorado generated 10 baserunners via nine hits and a walk, but remarkably only had one opportunity with a runner in scoring position.

Kyle Farmer and Brenton Doyle provided all the offense with solo home runs in the fifth and eighth innings, respectively. Farmer’s homer was his sixth of the season; Doyle’s was his 11th.

Together, they provided five of the Rockies’ nine hits. Leadoff batter Tyler Freeman also went 2-for-4, but for the rest of the lineup, it was a flummoxing night as Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez went seven innings and kept the Rox off-balance.

Colorado is 33-89.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Blalock found himself in trouble early and never seemed to recover in falling to 1-4 on the season.

Since going six shutout innings at Cleveland on July 28, Blalock has allowed 19 hits and walked 11 over 14 innings while surrendering 19 earned runs, good for a 12.21 ERA in that span. His starts have gotten progressively shorter — 5 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh on Aug. 3, 4 2/3 innings at Arizona last Saturday and 3 2/3 innings against Arizona on Thursday, when he failed to strike out a single Arizona batter.

He’s also allowed five home runs in the last three starts, spiking his season-long HR/9 rate to 2.11. The exquisite night in Cleveland is starting to look like the outlier.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Marte’s fifth-inning line drive ricocheted off the right-field scoreboard to score Perdomo and push Arizona’s advantage to 7-0.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .114 — Warming Bernabel’s average since he opened his major-league career by hitting .400 in his first 10 games, as he has significantly cooled off.

WHAT’S NEXT: Tanner Gordon goes to the mound looking for a better outcome than his last game against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, when he closed his appearance by allowing six consecutive base hits to finish the game with 10 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Brandon Pfaadt starts for Arizona. First pitch at Coors Field is set for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
