The Big Pod Machine: The Reds should grab Kyle Schwarber and the return of Hunter Greene

Reds Beat Reporter Gordon Wittenmyer and Sports Reporter Pat Brennan discuss the current state of the Cincinnati Reds.

Reds right fielder Noelvi Marte gave Cincinnati a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning with his double to left field to drive in Austin Hays, but Marte made the third out at third base on a controversial call that the Reds either did or could not challenge.

“There seems to be confusion over if the Reds are challenging or not,” FanDuel Sports Network play-by-play announcer John Sadak said during the broadcast. “They want to, but are they being told that the time window went by? The Phillies have left the field. Marte is still at third. The ruling is end of inning. And I don’t think they got the challenge word in time according to the umpiring crew.”

“Now, not really sure why the Reds weren’t able to challenge this,” analyst and National Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin said after the commercial break. “You can see right there it looks like the tag is in the chest. And are the hands on the bag at the time? I don’t know.”

“That’s close,” Sadak said.

“It is,” Larkin added.

Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters after the game that Marte was safe, and Francona took the blame for not challenging the call.

“(The Reds’ replay review) said he was safe,” Francona said after the game. “I didn’t get my hand up in time. That was on me. That was not on him. That was me. (I’m) getting old.”

“Were they clearly communicating they wanted the replay during that time? Was the umpiring crew not looking?” Sadak asked reporter Jim Day during the game.

“We’ll get clarification after the game,” Day responded, “but he either didn’t see Terry Francona put up his hand, or he did not put up his hand. You have to immediately put up your hand to let the umpire know (you) are looking at this will let you know if we want to challenge. Somewhere in there it didn’t happen.”

“And that quick look that we saw … on that angle, the tag try goes between his arms into his chest,” Sadak added. “But I couldn’t clearly tell if he had gotten to the bag or not. Marte … immediately popped up and (claimed he was safe).”
