KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City Royals signed a pitcher Tuesday to a deal that could set the stage for a Major League record.
Left-handed pitcher Rich Hill signed a minor league contract with the organization, Kansas City announced Tuesday. The 45-year-old will report to Surprise, Arizona, and then is expected to join Triple-A Omaha “soon,” the Royals said.
Hill debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 2005 and appeared in four games as a 44-year-old with the Boston Red Sox last season.

In his career that’s spanned two decades and began after being drafted by the Cubs in the 2002 MLB Draft, Hill has played for 13 MLB teams. That means if he appears in a Major League game with the Royals he’d join Edwin Jackson in tying the MLB record for most teams played for.
It’s unclear what, if any, role Hill would contribute in for the Royals. Kansas City’s starting rotation has the second-best ERA in MLB and the Royals bullpen is tied for fourth-best.
Hill has a career 90-74 record with a 4.01 ERA in 386 career games. He’s thrown over 1400 innings in the MLB.
