The Los Angeles Dodgers are placing All-Star third baseman Max Muncy on the injured list with a Grade 1 oblique strain, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Friday.
Buddy Kennedy, who the team just claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, is being activated.

Muncy suffered the injury ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels while doing pregame cage work. Muncy reported soreness in his side and underwent testing which revealed a strain.
Muncy will miss more than the minimum 10 days on the injured list, per Roberts, and the manager said it will be a week to week thing. Roberts said it’s similar to what Muncy dealt with last season, but more mild. Muncy missed three months last season with the injury.
“I don’t think anyone expects it to be season-ending,” Roberts said of Muncy’s new injury.
The Dodgers offense has struggled mightily without Muncy this season, averaging just 3.47 runs per game in the 32 games he’s missed.
Conversely, when Muncy plays, the Dodgers have averaged 5.79 runs per game.

Muncy missed a little over a month after suffering a knee injury in early July when Chicago White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor slid into his knee. The slugging third baseman managed to return ahead of schedule, but is now going back on the IL just a little over a week after his return.
Muncy is far from the only position player sidelined, as Tommy Edman, Kiké Hernandez and Hyeseong Kim are all out with varying injuries.
The Dodgers pitching staff has been ravaged by injuries all year. The position player group is filling up at a brutal time:

– Tommy Edman (ankle)
– Hyeseong Kim (shoulder)
– Kiké Hernández (elbow)

The Dodgers enter Friday night’s game against the Padres in second place in the National League West, one game back of the streaking Friars.
The Dodgers will need to manage without Muncy for the foreseeable future as they look to get back into first place in the NL West and maintain their standing in the playoff race with less than two months to go in the regular season.
