The Iowa Cubs washed and rinsed the Worcester Red Sox, 9-6.
Starter Spencer Turnbull struggled as he put Iowa in an early hole by giving up five runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. Turnbull walked one, hit one batter and struck out four.
Jordan Wicks relieved Turnbull, pitched the next 2.1 innings, retired all seven batters he faced and got the win. Wicks struck out four.
Nate Pearson threw the final two innings and collected the save. Pearson gave up one run on one hit and two walks. He struck out three.
With Iowa trailing 4-0, first baseman Jonathon Long hit a solo home run to get the I-Cubs on the board. It was his 18th on the campaign. Long had a big night, going 3 for 4 with a walk and the home run. He scored twice and drove home two.
In the sixth inning with Iowa down 5-2, center fielder Forrest Wall connected for a grand slam to put the I-Cubs up for good. It was Wall’s first home run in the Cubs organization and fifth overall. Wall went 1 for 2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly, giving him five RBI on the night.
Right fielder Kevin Alcántara was perfect, going 2 for 2 with two walks. Alcántara scored twice and hit a two-run single in the seventh inning.
DH Moisés Ballesteros was 2 for 4 with a walk and one run scored.
Shortstop Nicky Lopez went 2 for 4 with a stolen base. He scored once.
The Knoxville Smokies trashed the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 7-4.
Starter Nick Dean gave up a run in the first and a two-run home run in the second. The third inning went better and Dean finished going three innings and giving up three runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Tommy Romero threw the next five innings without allowing a run and got the win. Romero allowed three hits, walked one and struck out six.
Third baseman B.J. Murray Jr. hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his 17th on the season. Murray was 2 for 5 with three total RBI. He also stole a base.
First baseman Pablo Aliendo tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning with a solo home run. It was his ninth this eyar. Aliendo went 2 for 5 and scored three times.
Left fielder Jordan Nwogu was 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Right fielder Jaylen Palmer was 2 for 4 with a walk and a steal.
The South Bend Cubs were decoyed by the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins), 7-2. The loss drops South Bend back into a tie for first place in their division in the second half.
Kenten Egbert served up a solo home run in the first and a two-run shot in the fourth and got the loss. Egbert pitched five innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked no one.
First baseman Brian Kalmer was 3 for 4 and scored one run.
Right fielder Kade Snell was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases. He batting in one run.
Catcher Ariel Armas is showing no signs of cooling off, going 2 for 4.
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans extinguished the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 11-2. The Pelicans still have a six-game lead in their division in the second half.
Jostin Florentino lowered his Low-A ERA down to 1.66 after he pitched six scoreless innings. Florentino got his fourth win after allowing three hits. He struck out seven and walked no one.
Right fielder Eli Lovich hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning. It was his fourth home run this year and second with the Pelicans. 3 for 5 with five RBI. He scored two runs.
Second baseman Ty Southisene stayed hot, going 3 for 5. He scored one run and had one RBI.
Third baseman Christian Olivo doubled twice in a 2 for 4 night. Olivo also walked once. He scored twice and drove in one.
Left fielder Jose Escobar was 2 for 5. Escobar scored two times and drove in one.
Center fielder Kane Kepley continues to impress, going 3 for 6 with a triple. Kepley had two RBI and scored once.
