While the series finale didn’t go as planned, the Yankees at least got back in the win column in their three-game set with the Twins, taking the first two. As they wrapped up that homestand, it’s now time for them to head back out on the road, and that starts tonight in St. Louis.

This evening, the Yankees will play the first of an interleague series against the Cardinals, out under the arch in St. Louis. The Cardinals come in exactly even at 61-61, but that’s good enough for them to still be just a couple games back of the last NL Wild Card.

Tonight in the opener, Luis Gil will take the mound for the Yankees. After struggling in his series debut, Gil was much better in his second go-round, striking out seven and holding the Astros to two runs in 5.1 innings. As always with him, tonight will be about if he can control his stuff or if he ends up issuing too many walks. As befits a .500 team, the Cards do have at least a few hitters to pitch carefully — Iván Herrera, Brendan Donovan*, and Alec Burleson have all had good numbers this year and they’re all in tonight’s lineup for the Cardinals.

*Update: Well, the original St. Louis lineup had Donovan leading off, but he has been scratched.

As for St. Louis, Andre Pallante will get the ball. With both an ERA and a FIP that are closer to five than four, Pallante doesn’t strike a ton of guys out and has given up 16 home runs in his 23 games this year. If he’s not generating groundballs, he’s in trouble.

With Aaron Judge still restricted to DH duty, the Yankees seemingly don’t feel comfortable enough playing Giancarlo Stanton in right field at Busch as opposed to the Bronx, so he’s on the bench with Jasson Domínguez, Trent Grisham, and José Caballero lined up left to right. Ben Rice is catching and Cody Bellinger is in for the injured Paul Goldschmidt at first base (probably unfortunate for his old Cardinals fans who wanted to see him).
