The Chicago White Sox reinstated infielder Chase Meidroth from the 10-day injured list and designated fellow infielder Jacob Amaya for assignment before Friday night’s series opener against the Kansas City Royals, the club announced.
Meidroth, who missed time with a minor thumb injury after being hit by a pitch, returned to the lineup for the opener at Kauffman Stadium. The versatile 25-year-old has shown the ability to play multiple infield spots and provide occasional pop in the lineup. He delivered a multi-hit performance, including a homer, in the White Sox’s July meeting with the Cubs, and the club will lean on that flexibility as it fills out the roster down the stretch.
Meanwhile, Jacob Amaya was designated for assignment. The DFA gives the White Sox seven days to release or place Amaya on waivers. If he clears waivers, Amaya could be outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte, which is the most likely scenario at this juncture.
Why the move matters
The roster shuffle is the latest in a string of roster maneuvers by Chicago as the club juggles injuries and evaluates depth during the late summer. Reinstating Meidroth provides immediate infield depth, while the Amaya designation ultimately doesn’t come as a shock, considering he only appeared in three games during his brief stint with the big league club, one coming as a pinch runner.
