Three Bulldogs advance to state meet

Three Hancock College track and field athletes have advanced to the 3C2A State Championship.

Jacob Garbiso, Makayla Gonzalez and Esequiel Gauna all moved through at the Southern Cal Regional Championship at Saddleback last Saturday. Garbiso, an Arroyo Grande graduate who qualified for the Southern Cal finals in three events, advanced to the state meet with a third place in the men’s shot put at 14.82 meters.

Gonzalez advanced with an eighth-place finish in the women’s steeplechase in 13 minutes, 3.58 seconds. Gauna moved through with a ninth-place finish in the men’s javelin with a best of 47.31.

Hancock’s Abigail Aponte (women’s shot put, hammer throw) and Juan Santiago (men’s 10,000) meters qualified for the So Cal Regional though they did not advance to the state meet.

The 3C2A State Championship will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at San Mateo College.

Boys golfCIF Central Section D2, Area tournaments

Bakersfield Christian won the team Division 2 championship at Tulare Golf Course Monday with a team score of 400. Jake Steele led the Eagles to the title with a 73.

Central Coast Athletic Association (CCAA) member Templeton placed second at 404. Owen Bousman led Templeton with a 77. Jonas Smith of CCAA member Morro Bay was the medalist with a 70.

CCAA squads among the 17 scoring teams included Templeton, St. Joseph (sixth place, 422), Morro Bay (seventh, 423), Cabrillo (13th, 433) and Atascadero (15th, 461). Not enough Paso Robles golfers finished for the Bearcats to register a team score.

In the individual standings, Smith finished ahead of both Steele and Gavin Wilson of Tulare Union by three strokes. Steele and Wilson tied for second place. Jadon Valpredo of Bakersfield Christian and Joseph Montoya of Reedley Immanuel tied for fourth at 74 and rounded out the individual top five.

Rowan Clarke led Cabrillo with an 83. William Brown paced St. Joseph with an 84, and Kipton Olivera led Atascadero with an 85.

BaseballPaso Robles 16, Pioneer Valley 6 (5 innings)

The Bearcats (14-11, 7-5) beat the Panthers (10-14, 5-7) in a Sunset League game at Paso Robles and earned a share of the league championship with San Luis Obispo.

Pioneer Valley’s bid to play spoiler for the second straight time failed Monday. Last Thursday, the Panthers won 8-2 at Templeton and prevented the Eagles from getting a share of the league title.

Xander Hermanson had two hits and drove in four runs for Paso Robles. Five Panthers had a hit and an RBI.

Both teams will compete in the CIF Central Section playoffs which will start Monday.

Youth track and fieldCanley wins at youth county meet

The Lompoc Central Coast All-Stars squad’s Christine Canley won the open 100 and 200 races and ran a leg for the winning 4×1 relay team in the girls fifth-sixth grade division at the Santa Barbara Youth County Meet at Santa Barbara City College May 3.

Canley also finished second in the long jump. The winning 4×1 relay squad consisted of Kora Koehler, Canley, Tayla Terrones and Makyla Watt.     

Lompoc adult basketball league

A co-ed adult basketball league is being established in Lompoc as a fundraiser for Lompoc High School basketball programs.

Registration will end June 1. League games will begin on June 23.

The entry fee is $500. Teams will consist of eight-to-10 players, and each team is guaranteed nine games. There will be playoffs.
