There was an expectation heading into this year’s trade deadline that at least one of the Seattle Mariners’ top prospects would be on the move.

When the dust settled, the Mariners made two of the biggest deals before the deadline, landing Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez in separate trades with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Yet Seattle didn’t have to dip into its deep pool of touted of prospects to acquire those players.
According to MLB Pipeline’s rankings, the top farmhand Seattle parted with was ninth-ranked first baseman Tyler Locklear, who was the headliner of the deal for Suárez.
Here’s what the Mariners’ full trade deadline looked like.
Mariners receive Naylor, Suárez and left-hander Caleb Ferguson.
Mariners trade Locklear, left-hander Brandyn Garcia, right-hander Ashton Izzi, right-hander Juan Burgos, right-hander Jeter Martinez and right-hander Hunter Cranton.
Longtime MLB insider Keith Law of The Athletic told Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk on Thursday he was stunned by how Seattle made the trades it did without giving away any of slew of touted prospects.
“They gave up nothing,” Law said. “Honestly, I could not get over how they made all those additions and didn’t touch any of the top prospects in their system. We’re talking about guys with maybe a chance to be competent Major League relievers at some point. I really thought one of the bigger prospects – not a Colt Emerson – but one of their bigger-name prospects would end up somewhere else at the deadline, which we’ve seen them do before to get (Randy) Arozarena (last season). They traded two pretty good prospects (outfielder Aidan Smith and right-hander Brody Hopkins), and this year they didn’t have to trade any of those guys.”
