The Rays are wrapping up their 12-game road trip in San Francisco, California. On the mound for Tampa Bay is 6’8” right-hander Joe Boyle, who looks to rebound after a short and tough outing in Seattle last weekend. On the other side of the rubber is Landen Roupp, making his 21st appearance of the season for the Giants.
In other exciting news, batting seventh for the Rays is Bobby Seymour, who will be making his Major League debut. Fun fact: he’s the first player named Bob to appear in the majors since 2010.
The game started with back-and-forth scoring from both teams. The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a two-out walk came back to haunt Joe Boyle. However, Junior Caminero launched a slider on the outer part of the plate for his eighth homer of the month of August, and 35th of the season, into the left-field stands.
In the second inning, the Giants scored two runs off the bats of Cristian Koss and Heliot Ramos. Nevertheless, in the blink of an eye, the Rays tied it up with a Brandon Lowe sacrifice fly that scored Feduccia and a Yandy Díaz bloop single that brought home the tying run. The game was tied at three apiece.
After the Rays clawed back from a 3-1 deficit, the Giants answered with a massive inning. Former Ray Willy Adames crushed a solo shot to right-center, ending Joe Boyle’s night. Ian Seymour came in for relief but allowed two more runs on a bloop double by Patrick Bailey. After a rough third inning, the Giants led 6-3.
Just when everyone thought the Rays wouldn’t respond, they loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth. Christopher Morel came in to pinch-hit for Feduccia and grounded out to first, cutting the deficit to 6-4. With two outs, Simpson came through with a clutch single to left field, tying the game at six.
After four straight innings of runs, both bullpens finally settled down. The Rays’ relief corps allowed just three hits after the fourth, with strong outings from Seymour, Clevinger, Jax, and Uceta.
In the ninth, when everything pointed to extra innings, Yandy Díaz delivered with an RBI single off Giants closer Randy Rodriguez to give Tampa Bay a 7-6 lead. Fairbanks closed the door in the bottom half, securing a thrilling series-opening win for the Rays.
Tomorrow’s matchup is scheduled for 9:45 PM ET, with Aidan Houser set to face veteran future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander.
