Yusei Kikuchi proved susceptible to the long ball, snapping his two-game winning streak as the Angels were taken down 10-3 by the Athletics on Friday evening at Sutter Health Park. The Halos are now 59-63 and 26-33 on the road.

In his second-shortest appearance of the season, the left-hander lasted just four innings, allowing home runs on two of the five hits the Athletics managed against him. A solo shot from Shea Langeliers in the first opened the scoring before Colby Thomas launched a three-run blast in the third to make it 4-1.

Travis d’Arnaud’s double in the second got the Angels on the board, while Zach Neto launched a two-run homer in the fifth (his 20th of the season) to cut the deficit to 4-3 as part of a historic day for himself. The blast brought him back into the 20-homer, 20 stolen base club, now the only shortstop this season to reach the milestone.

Neto is just the fourth player in franchise history to have multiple 20/20 seasons, joining Don Baylor, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. At just 24 years old, he continues to establish himself as a key piece in the core of the franchise moving forward.

While they did fight to cut the deficit to one, the Los Angeles bullpen could not hold firm in hopes of a comeback. In just 2/3 of an inning, Connor Brogdon allowed a Darrell Hernaiz sacrifice fly and a Tyler Soderstrom RBI single to stretch the Athletics’ lead to 6-3.

Carson Fulmer also ran into trouble, allowing four runs in the eighth as he worked through the final 3 1/3 innings of the contest. Nick Kurtz’s three-run homer, the second of the game for the Athletics, made it a 10-3 game and cemented the victory.

Los Angeles had held a 4-0 season series advantage before the loss on Friday and will look to force a rubber match in the second of three games on Saturday evening. Left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-7, 4.63 ERA) will take the mound for the Angels against Athletics’ right-hander Luis Morales (0-0, 1.93 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
