Shortstop Alexis Hernandez was promoted to High-A South Bend from Low-A Myrtle Beach. Hernandez will join his brother Cristian in South Bend.

The Iowa Cubs were run through the wringer by the Worcester Red Sox, 9-5.

Connor Noland started and took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings. Noland walked three and struck out two.

Catcher Moisés Ballesteros hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, his 11th on the year. Ballesteros went 1 for 5.

Third baseman Chase Strumpf was 3 for 4 and scored one run.

The Knoxville Smokies blasted past the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 5-3.

Tyler Schlaffer pitched the first six innings and got the win after allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out nine and walked two.

Center fielder Brett Bateman led off the top of the first inning with a home run, his second of the season and first ever in Double-A. Bateman had a two-run single in the top of the ninth, giving him three RBI on the night. Bateman was 3 for 5 with a stolen base.

Right fielder Jaylen Palmer went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored twice.

Third baseman BJ Murray Jr. was perfect on the night, going 1 for 1 with three walks. He also stole a base and scored one run.

The South Bend Cubs moved back into first place all by themselves with a 5-3 win over the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins).

Evan Aschenbeck only lasted two innings after giving up three runs in the second. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. He struck out four and walked no one.

Cole Reynolds entered the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning and got the win after South Bend pushed a run across the plate in the top of the sixth. The final line on Reynolds was no runs on one hit and two walks over one inning. He also hit one batter. Reynolds struck out one.

Luis Rujano pitched the bottom of the ninth and got the save. He allowed two one-out singles, but then buckled down and got the next two batters to end the game. Rujano struck out two and walked no one.

Left fielder Edgar Alvarez tacked on an insurance run with a solo home run in the seventh inning, his seventh on the season. Alvarez went 2 for 5 and scored twice.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez was 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Hernandez tied the game up in the fifth inning with an RBI single and scored the first run of the game in the top of the first.

Right fielder Kade Snell went 2 for 4 with two steals and two RBI.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were mesmerized by the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 4-2.

Ethan Flanagan started and got the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits over five innings. Flanagan struck out six and walked no one.

All the Birds offense came on a two-run home run by right fielder Alexey Lumpuy in the sixth inning. It was Lumpuy’s ninth home run this year. Lumpuy went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Second baseman Ty Southisene was 2 for 4. He scored on Lumpuy’s home run. After hitting .162 in May and .187 in June, Southisene hit .298 in July and is hitting .385 so far in August.
