Rockies Report, Game 123:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A six-run eighth-inning rally capped by Tyler Freeman’s two-run pinch-hit homer provided the final surge in an eight-run deluge that overturned a 7-2 deficit to power the Rockies to a 10-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in front of 27,929 at Coors Field on Saturday night.

Freeman’s homer put the cherry on a rally that began with a Jordan Beck double, saw the flames fanned with a pair of walks to Warming Bernabel and Kyle Karros, then truly ignited when Brenton Doyle doubled off the right-field scoreboard to bring home Beck and Warming Bernabel, drawing the Rox within a run.

At that point, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo exchanged relieving Andrews — Saalfrank for the beleagured and gassed Hoffmann, who hadn’t recorded an out since striking out Hunter Goodman to open the eighth inning, racking up 29 pitches — including 15 on the two walks to Bernabel and Karros.

But it took just three pitches for Saalfrank to fall into trouble, as Kyle Farmer’s line drive fell just under the glove of a lunging Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in left field. As Gurriel fumbled with the ball, Doyle followed Karros home to put the Rox in front. for the first time all night.

The rally ebbed momentarily when Saalfrank got Ryan Ritter on a groundout to third base, but then Freeman unleashed a rare burst of power to complete the Rockies’ unlikely comeback.

Colorado trailed 7-2 after Adrian Del Castillo’s two-run homer in the seventh, but got a pair of runs back in the bottom of that inning via a Ritter triple off the Bridich Barrier and a Freeman RBI groundout.

Victor Vodnik closed out the wild night by logging his his sixth save of the season. Four have come in the last five days. He retired the Diamondbacks in order in the ninth to complete the comeback.

Colorado is 34-89 and has won four of its last five games since dropping eight in a row. The recent surge has taken them off an all-time worst pace in the 162-game era; Colorado is now on pace to finish 45-117.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The power was there for Chase Dollander in his second start since his midseason return to the minor leagues, but unfortunately for the Rockies’ 2023 first-round pick, runs for the Diamondbacks were, too, as they tagged him for five runs — four earned — over 4 2/3 innings.

Still, there were moments of brilliance — such as when he struck out the side in the second inning, including one that saw him win an eight-pitch duel with Blaze Alexander when he caught the Arizona third baseman looking with a 99-MPH fastball on the outside corner.

Dollander labored to a 95-pitch outing, finishing with six strikeouts and a pair of walks. The rally took him off the hook for a loss; Ryan Rolison eventually received credit for the win folllowing a scoreless and spotless eighth inning.
