Offseason acquisitions and emerging young talent have fueled the Boston Red Sox’s playoff push, but a returning veteran is quietly enjoying a resurgent season.
Following three injury-ridden years in Boston, Trevor Story has finally stayed healthy and shown why the Red Sox gave him a $140 million contract in 2022. The shortstop is batting .260 with 19 home runs and 22 stolen bases, putting him one long ball away from his first 20/20 season since 2021.
Story fueled both Red Sox victories over the Miami Marlins, hitting a walk-off single in Friday’s 2-1 win before notching a homer and steal in Saturday’s 7-5 triumph. He’s now batting .333/.400/.500 in August.
After Saturday’s win, via NESN’s post-game coverage, Red Sox manager Alex Cora celebrated Story’s bounce-back campaign.
“It’s been a great season, let’s put it that way,” Cora said. “He’s been very consistent with everything. Running the bases, hitting the ball hard, driving in runs, playing great defense, leading the group since the (Rafael Devers) trade. He was one of guys very vocal about it in the clubhouse — making sure that we stayed the course.

“I couldn’t be more proud. He’s been amazing for us.”
Story went ice cold in May, hitting .158/.200/.232 with a 34.7 strikeout percentage. He’s since gone .299/.344/.516 while leading the offense in runs (47), RBIs (56), and WAR (2.4).
The former Colorado Rockies star played a combined 163 games in his first three seasons with the Red Sox, but Story has been a mainstay on Cora’s lineup card in 2025. Story has played 120 of 124 games, making every start at shortstop.

Story has spent Boston’s last eight games batting cleanup, but Cora has him hitting second for the first time this season on Sunday.
