The Knights had a rough week at home against Memphis (64-54), as they only collected one victory.
Tim Elko, 26, really wants another chance in the majors, and it showed this week. Elko simply could not be stopped, as he finished 9-for-23 with five homers and 10 RBIs, leading the system in both categories this week. Elko also picked up a double and two walks to finish with a sky-high 1.549 OPS. Elko’s most recent MLB appearance was on July 11, but at this rate, he could be back soon, especially considering the recent offensive struggles at the top level.
Outfielder Corey Julks, 29, had a smaller sample size this week, but on a per game basis, Julks was actually slightly better than Elko. Julks went 5-for-11 with three homers and three walks, as he made his time count. Julks was designated for assignment on Tuesday, but he cleared waives and was outrighted back to Charlotte. Clearly, Julks took the DFA personally, as Redbirds pitchers did not have any answers for him.

The Barons won four out of six against Pensacola (58-55), which is business as usual for the Barons. Incredibly, the Barons’ 4-2 week slightly decreased slightly their second half winning percentage.
It is safe to say that outfielder Braden Montgomery, 22, was up to the task this week. Montgomery went 11-for-22 with eight doubles, five walks, five RBIs, and he stole a base in his only attempt. Pensacola pitchers struggled immensely against the star prospect, who posted a 1.485 OPS this week. I do not recall a hitter at any level slicing eight doubles in a span of six games, but that is what Montgomery did. Montgomery earned a promotion to Birmingham on July 29, and he is making his presence felt, as he is slashing .324/.410/.500 in Double-A. Montgomery started the season with Kannapolis, but suddenly, he is making easy work of pitchers two levels higher. Bravo to Montgomery on a fantastic series in Pensacola.

The Dash stumbled a bit this week, dropping four out of six at home against the Tourists (48-64).
Drake Logan, 24, who has gotten most of his playing time in right field and center field, was dominant against Asheville. Logan went 9-for-23 with a homer, a triple, five RBIs, and two walks. Logan also stole four bases in five attempts, so he was dangerous after getting on base, which he did quite often this week. This is Logan’s second weekly award in the past three weeks.
Honorable mention goes to Ryan Burrowes, 21, who was promoted from Kannapolis to Winston-Salem on July 22. Burrowes is already showing that he belongs at the higher level, and although he only played in four games this week, he made his time count. Burrowes went 4-for-9 with two walks, a double, and three stolen bases in four attempts.

The Cannon Ballers had a week they would like to forget, dropping all six games against the Augusta GreenJackets (61-49).
Starting pitcher Grant Umberger, 23, performed admirably during Saturday’s game against Augusta. Umberger pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings, and he racked up eight strikeouts while only issuing one walk. Umberger has pitched 92 innings this season, all with the Cannon Ballers. Umberger has an excellent ERA (2.64) and FIP (also 2.64), as he has been very reliable for Kannapolis. Incredibly, Umberger has only allowed one home run this season, as he has done a great job of limiting sharp contact. Well done to Umberger on his second weekly award, as he was one of the few bright spots for Kannapolis this week.

The DSL White Sox had a fantastic week, winning all six of their games to improve to 28-25 on the season. They only have two more games this season, so they have clinched a winning record.
Outfielder Osniel Castillo, 19, was on fire this week, finishing 5-for-12 with a homer, a triple, a double, three walks, and four driven in. Castillo also stole two bases without getting caught, as he was firing on all cylinders. Csatillo really flexed his speed this week, and most of his playing time has come in center field, a valuable position.
Orlando Suarez, 18, also had a terrific week, pitching seven shutout innings and collecting 10 strikeouts without issuing any walks. Suarez, a right-handed pitcher, took care of business on Monday and then again on Saturday, only allowing one hit in each of those starts.
