A “massive” punishment is likely coming for Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles, perhaps as soon as Monday afternoon, August 18.

Robles, 28, was playing in a rehab game for the Seattle Mariners’ Triple-A team, Tacoma, on Sunday evening. He was facing Las Vegas right-hander Joey Estes in the third inning of the regular season game. Robles took immediate offense to the first pitch of the at-bat, a fastball up and in. Robles swung at the pitch, but it seemed to be more out of self-defense than anything else. He was nearly clipped by the pitch that he swung at, before he dropped the bat. Moments later, he flung it out of frustration at the Las Vegas pitcher.
The former Washington Nationals outfielder hurled his wooden bat at the Las Vegas pitcher. Thankfully, he didn’t make any contact, but he was still ejected by home plate umpire Joe McCarthy. Robles was held back by his teammates, though he attempted to rush the mound, too.

Robles, who has been rehabbing a dislocated left shoulder he suffered in April, was clearly angered by the near hit-by-pitch. He had already been hit by a pitch three times in five games during this rehab stint. Robles had also already been hit twice by this pitcher over the past year.

Las Vegas is the Triple-A team of the Athletics, who have hit Robles four times since the start of 2024. Still, there’s no excuse to throwing your bat at someone. A massive punishment is likely coming.
Major suspension is coming for Victor Robles
A major punishment is likely coming for Victor Robles. Some have suggested that Robles should be suspended for the rest of the season. That is probably extreme, but a multi-game – or perhaps even multi-week – suspension seems possible.

“That should be a rest-of-the-year suspension for Victor Robles,” one A’s fan suggested on social media.
Back in 2015, then-Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper threw his helmet in the direction of then-San Francisco Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland following a hit-by-pitch that was clearly intentional. Harper ended up getting suspended for four games. Robles wasn’t intentionally hit by a pitch on Sunday night, but he had reason to be frustrated. A suspension a bit longer than Harper’s could be possible.
Victor Robles released a statement
“I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for my recent reaction on the field. I let my frustration get the best of me, and I understand how that may have affected not just the game, but the energy and respect we all work so hard to maintain.

“Coming off a long rehab and being away from the game for most of the season has been physically and mentally challenging. Adding to that, the recent passing of my mother has been incredibly hard, and I’ve been doing my best to hold it together. That’s not an excuse, but some context I feel you deserve to understand where I’m coming from.
“Getting hit 5 times in 15 at-bats added to that pressure, and I reacted in a way I’m not proud of. This game means the world to me, and so do the people who play it. I respect every one of you – my teammates, the opposing players, and everyone in this league.
“I’m committed to being better, not just as a player, but as a teammate and competitor. I appreciate your understanding, and I’m grateful to be back on the field doing what I love.
