The Philadelphia Phillies recalled relief pitcher Nolan Hoffam from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and optioned right-handed pitcher Max Lazar to Lehigh Valley on Monday.

With Lazar returning to the minor leagues after throwing the past two games, the team is likely bringing up Hoffman for the day.  Lefty José Alvarado ready to be activated on Tuesday from the suspended list after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance on May 18.

If he gets into a game, it will be his Major League debut.

José Alvarado Set to Return to Phillies Bullpen

Alvarado has made 20 appearances for the Phillies this season, with a 2.70 ERA with seven saves.. He can hit triple digits with his fastball and gives the Phillies another quality back-of-the-bullpen arm for the stretch run.

He has made five appearances in Triple-A this year with a 0.00 ERA.

Phillies Bullpen Depth Ahead of Stretch Run

With Alvarado returning, the Phillies bullpen has another devastating option in late innings to pair with Jhoan Duran, who is now the team’s closer.  The one major issue with Alvarado is that he is ineligible for postseason play.

In addition to Duran, he will join lefties Matt Straham, Tanner Banks, and righties Orion Kerkering, David Robertson, Joe Ross, and Jordan Romano in the Phillies bullpen for the final month and a half, trying to capture an N.L. East crown.
