DETROIT — Javier Baez delivered a thrilling performance Tuesday night, hitting his second go-ahead, three-run homer in the 11th inning to secure a 10-9 victory for the Detroit Tigers over the Boston Red Sox. This marked Baez’s first multi-homer game in Detroit.
The American League-leading Tigers maintained leads in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings, only to see Boston rally each time. Despite falling behind in both extra innings, Detroit managed to clinch their second consecutive win against Boston and their 10th in 13 games.
In the 11th inning, Kristian Campbell hit a two-run homer, and Greg Weissert (1-1) was unable to preserve a two-run lead. Weissert allowed Jace Jung to hit a leadoff single, followed by Baez’s decisive shot to left field.
Beau Brieske (1-1) earned the win after conceding two runs—one earned—and one hit in the 11th inning.
Boston initially took a one-run lead in the 10th with Ceddanne Rafaela’s RBI groundout. Trey Sweeney’s two-out single in the bottom half of the inning tied the game at 7-all.
Baez, who has revitalized his career this season after three challenging years in Detroit, also hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
The Red Sox tied the game at 6-all in the eighth with Hamilton’s two-run blast off Tommy Kahnle. Boston had an opportunity to take the lead later in the inning with runners in scoring position, but Kahnle struck out Rafael Devers.
Boston’s Alex Bregman, who faced boos during each at-bat for declining an offseason offer from the Tigers, hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
