The Orioles have improved their play recently, winning five out of their last six games, and they have a couple of younger players to thank for providing a spark to the club. They called up outfielder Dylan Beavers and catcher Samuel Basallo over the weekend, and both players made their marks and helped the team win. The future is here in Baltimore, and these two will add to a young core that should help the club rebound quickly next year. Beavers, 24, was the No. 33 pick in the 2022 draft out of the University of California and is considered the Orioles’ third-best prospect. Basallo is the first dividend from the Orioles’ focus on international signings during general manager Mike Ellias’ time. He was given a then-record $1.3 million signing in 2021 as a 17-year-old out of the Dominican Republic and now the 21-year-old is the Orioles’ top overall prospect. Both players were having great seasons in the minor leagues with Basallo leading the team with 23 home runs in only 76 games. Beavers was leading the Norfolk Tide with a .304 batting average along with 18 home runs. His hitting prowess has seemed to follow him to the big leagues as he has four hits in his first three games, batting .364 since his debut Saturday.Basallo has also had an impressive debut, becoming the first Orioles rookie to have back-to-back multi-RBI games to begin a career. He had a double against the Boston Red Sox that bounced off the top of the Green Monster that would have been a home run in most parks. He will play catcher, first base and designated hitter for the club, and it will be interesting how manager Tony Mansolino fits him into the lineup. The Orioles only have 37 games left in the season and the “Killer B’s” should give the fans something to look forward to and help them continue a strong finish to the season.
