Matt Reynolds, who has served as the head coach of the UMass baseball team since 2017, is departing the program and accepted another head coaching position, per a press release from UMass athletics on Tuesday morning.
Kendall Rogers of D1baseball.com reported Monday night that Reynolds was leaving to accept the head coaching job at Division 3 Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.
Brandon Shileikis and Max Weir have been appointed co-acting head coaches of the Minutemen after serving as assistants on Reynolds’ staff this past season.
“First, I want to thank Matt Reynolds for his tireless work ethic to advance our baseball program since his return to UMass in 2017,” Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said in the release. “Matt has been a great partner and teammate in our department and will certainly be missed. We extend Matt, his wife Alex and their young family our very best wishes for continued success.”
In eight seasons at the helm, Reynolds compiled a record of 121-218-2 (.361) after taking over for longtime skipper Mike Stone. Reynolds graduated from UMass in 2005 and began his coaching career with the Minutemen as a graduate assistant the same year.
“I would like to thank Ryan Bamford for taking a chance on me over eight years ago,” Reynolds said in the release. “Having been at UMass as an undergraduate and graduate student, assistant coach and head coach, I can safely say that although I may be leaving UMass, this place will forever be a part of me. As an alum I am so proud of the trajectory of this institution and that of the Athletic Department. I would like to thank our team, alumni and supporters of the program, coaching staff, support staff, administration, colleagues in the department and everyone involved in UMass Athletics for making my time at UMass such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I look forward to my new role as an alum and fan, and I will forever bleed maroon!”
Shileikis has been with the UMass program since 2023, following stops at Amherst College and Roger Williams University. Weir wrapped up his first year in Amherst this past spring after stints on the coaching staff at Nichols College, Gardner-Webb University and American International College.
“I look forward to working closely with our acting co-head coaches and our support staff to ensure a seamless transition for our team as we start the academic year,” Bamford added. “Brandon and Max have made considerable contributions to this program the last few years and have displayed great alignment and interest in meeting our programmatic goals: a quality student-athlete experience, success in the classroom and competitiveness on the field.”
