KANSAS CITY, Mo. – And you thought this Rangers season was leaving you numb?

Consider the plight of Rangers relievers, who are experiencing tingling and numbness in their arms almost like it was contagious. Cole Winn on Wednesday became the second Ranger in a week to head to the injured list with nerve irritation.

Jon Gray is also on the IL dealing with similar symptoms. The Rangers were awaiting a diagnosis from vascular specialist Dr. Gregory Pearl on the possibility that Gray is dealing with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS).

The Rangers recalled lefty Jacob Latz to replace Winn on the active roster.

Winn, who allowed the final three runs of Tuesday’s 5-2 loss, said he did not feel the sensation when he hit Jonathan India with the first pitch he threw and with the bases loaded on Tuesday. He did say that in his second inning of work, he felt more of a sensation akin to “dead arm,” in his biceps. In his second inning of work, he walked Mike Yastrzemski, then gave up a homer to Bobby Witt Jr.

“We don’t think it’s anything too serious, but given kind of his workload and where we are in the season, we’re not taking any chances,” President of Baseball Operations Chris Young said. “He’s had a heavy workload the last few days and we don’t want to put him at risk. We think with 15 days, he’ll be back and finish strong.”

Over a 12-day stretch beginning Aug. 6, Winn had appeared six times and thrown 7 ⅔ innings, accounting for roughly 25% of his major league workload this season.

The Rangers sent Latz to Triple-A Round Rock on Aug. 1 after acquiring relievers Danny Coulombe and Phil Maton. At Round Rock, his outings were able to be scheduled with more rest between appearances. He pitched just four times in nearly three weeks there, pitching six scoreless innings with three hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Latz said the option gave him the ability to “reset” a bit and produced a slight uptick in velocity due to the extra rest. Between the majors and minors, he has already worked 70 ⅓ innings this season, his most in a professional season since 2021.
