Jose Cabballero was traded from the Rays to the Yankees on July 31, in the middle of a game between the two clubs. However, his reunion with his old team didn’t go as he had imagined. The infielder was tossed in the 10th inning against the Rays on Wednesday night, just three weeks after being traded from Tampa Bay to New York at the deadline.

The incident came right after a replay review upheld an “out” call on Caballero’s steal attempt at second base. Caballero kept arguing with the crew and was ejected by second-base umpire Roberto Ortiz.

The game concluded a wild series in Tampa. One night earlier, Jose Caballero had homered twice in the Yankees’ 13-3 onslaught, but emotions boiled over late on Wednesday. He also swiped his 40th base of the season before the ejection. After the game, Caballero admitted he has to do better going forward.

“Really frustrated. I have to do better next time,” Cabello said.

“I wasn’t happy about the call,” the 28-year-old added. “There’s no way you can see that I came off the bag…in real time.”

The Yankees’ offense carried the day. Giancarlo Stanton delivered a clutch pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 10th inning, Austin Wells went deep twice, and Devin Williams struck out the side to secure a 6-4 win. Cam Schlittler was nearly perfect through 6 2/3 innings, setting the tone before Tampa Bay’s late rally forced extra innings.

Jose Caballero, meanwhile, finished with a stolen base and a walk before the ejection. Since joining, he has provided New York with energy, but his emotions got the better of him this time.

After enduring a torrid month, the Yankees are back to winning games. They will now head home for a crucial AL East series against the Boston Red Sox, looking to continue with momentum after sweeping through the road trip.
