Braves claim RHP Cal Quantrill off waivers from Marlins

  • August 21, 2025

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Atlanta Braves on Thursday claimed right-hander Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins, the team announced.

The team optioned right-hander Dane Dunning in a corresponding move.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first reported the waiver claim.

Additionally, third baseman Austin Riley will miss the remainder of the 2025 season after undergoing core injury surgery, or sports hernia surgery, on Thursday, according to the team.

Atlanta also activated outfielder Jake Fraley, another waiver claimee, while recalling southpaw Dylan Dodd. In corresponding moves for those two, the team optioned right-hander Connor Seabold and placed infielder Luke Williams on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique, retroactive to Aug. 19.

Quantrill, 30, has a 5.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 109.2 innings (24 starts) with Miami this season. He signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract over winter and was placed on outright waivers on Tuesday.

With right-handers Reynaldo Lopez and Spencer Schwellenbach officially ruled out for the rest of the 2026 campaign, there is simply a need to eat up innings. Quantrill will slot into a rotation that includes Spencer Strider, Hurston Waldrep, Joey Wentz, Bryce Elder, and eventually, Chris Sale, who’s scheduled to make his third rehab start on Sunday.

Quantrill, a former No. 8 overall draft pick, owns a lifetime ERA of 4.26 in 828.2 innings as a big leaguer. Most of his success came from 2021 to 22 with the Cleveland Guardians, but has a 5.21 ERA dating back to 2023.

In 2025, Quantrill has struggled against right-handed opponents while shutting down lefties, who have slashed .209/.275/.335 in 209 plate appearances this season. Opposing righties have slashed .337/.379/.605 against Quantrill.

Quantrill sits at 93.6 mph on his four-seamer and also throws a cutter, splitter, sinker, slider and curveball.

Quantrill will start Saturday’s game against the New York Mets at Truist Park. The Braves (58-69) currently sit 9.5 games behind the Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot.
