Rockies Report, Game 128:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A successful homestand for the Rockies ended on a downer as the Dodgers pummeled Chase Dollander early, building a 7-1 lead en route to a 9-5 win in front of 28,305 at Coors Field on Thursday afternoon.

Within six pitches, Los Angeles led 2-0 as Mookie Betts drew a five-pitch walk and Freddie Freeman launched a center-cut fastball 451 feet beyond the Dodgers bullpen over the right-center field fence.

Colorado got a run back in the bottom of the first on a Hunter Goodman RBI groundout that was made possible by some A-B-C baseball: a single, a sacrifice bunt and a disengagement violation that moved Tyler Freeman around the bases.

But that was as close as the Rox drew. Dollander allowed a double, two singles and a walk in the second inning, bringing one run home. He plunked Will Smith with the bases loaded to score Los Angeles’ fourth run of the day. The Dodgers added one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth before the Rockies could respond again.

Brenton Doyle had a 4-RBI day, delivering a sacrifice fly in the fourth-ining, an RBI single to score Goodman in the sixth and a two-run homer to score Yanquiel Fernández in the eighth inning.

Doyle has hit .391 this month after hitting .327 in July; he’s raised his average from .193 entering July to .244 after Thursday’s game.

Colorado split the series with the Dodgers and finished the homestand 5-3, but dropped to 37-91 on the season.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Dollander got a gift on his first pitch of the afternoon, as a 99-MPH fastball outside of the zone was called a strike.

As it turned out, the rookie needed all the help he could get. His next four pitches to leadoff batter Mookie Betts were nowhere near the strike zone. When Dollander finally found the zone, his fastball settled in the middle of it — and landed somewhere beyond the Dodgers’ bullpen, the first homer allowed by Dollander in his last four starts.

Dollander labored to 97 pitches in just 3 2/3 innings before Nick Anderson relieved him after two runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning via a Michael Conforto sacrifice fly and an Alex Freeland double.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Andy Pages added a solo home run off Nick Anderson in the fifth inning to push Los Angeles’ lead to 8-2.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .839 — Opponents’ OPS against Dollander this season.

WHAT’S NEXT: A three-game series at Pittsburgh. Antonio Senzatela starts the opener at PNC Park on Friday night; Braxton Ashcraft gets the call for the Pirates. First pitch will be at 4:40 p.m MDT.
