The Atlanta Braves couldn’t keep the New York Mets’ bats quiet on Friday night, falling 12-7 in the series opener at Truist Park. Joey Wentz got the ball for Atlanta, but his outing unraveled quickly and put the team in an early hole they couldn’t climb out of.
Wentz lasted just 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits. Crooked numbers in the second, third, and fourth innings set the tone and left the Braves playing catch-up all night.
Atlanta’s bullpen was forced into early action and couldn’t completely stop the bleeding, as the Mets kept adding runs through the middle frames. By the time the Braves’ offense got rolling, the deficit was too much to overcome.
The bats did show some life, with Ronald Acuña Jr., Vidal Bruján, and Jurickson Profar driving in runs to keep the game from turning into a blowout, but Wentz’s rough start loomed large.
The Braves will look for a sharper performance tonight as they try to even up the series before Sunday’s finale.
