In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Anthony Veneziano was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
King rejoins the Cardinals after missing nearly a month with a left groin strain. Meanwhile, Veneziano returns to Memphis after two appearances with the Cardinals in his week-long stint since he was recalled.
John King Returns to the Cardinals
With his activation to the active roster, King will rejoin the Cardinals for the first time since July 29.
The southpaw reliever has had an up and down season, and had struggled before his injury. King held a 3.38 ERA early in June, but then struggled throughout the summer until his injury.

The Cardinals’ reliever currently holds a 5.18 ERA across 42.1 innings with a WHIP over 1.6. King also has a career low 1.85 strikeout to walk ratio this year.
However, King is a sixth-year MLB veteran with a career 3.87 ERA. In the last three years he’s spent with the Cardinals, his ERA is a tad lower at 3.44.
King is coming off the two best years of his career in St. Louis, boasting an outstanding 1.45 ERA across 18.2 innings in 2023, and a 2.85 ERA across 60 innings last year.
The Cardinals’ reliever hasn’t had the same success in 2025, but now that he’s returned healthy, maybe the southpaw can find what worked that last couple years and finish the season strong.
