NEW YORK – During the Yankees’ forgettable, four-error 6-3 loss to the Red Sox on Thursday night, Ben Rice clubbed his 20th homer of the year.
That was the Yanks’ 15th homer in their last three games, and as MLB.com pointed out, their 20th consecutive run scored via a home run.
This team’s dependence on the three-run homer, or multiple players going yard, is nothing new in Yankee Universe. But they’ll have to be a more resourceful offensive club if there’s going to be a deep October run in the Bronx.
At least there’s a positive trend happening lately, with the Yankees being more aggressive in trying to take the extra base, and in stolen base attempts.
Over their last six games, the Yanks have stolen 14 bases, and they’ve swiped 18 bases in their last nine games.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Aaron Judge stole bases in Thursday’s four-game series opener against the Red Sox, and manager Aaron Boone said “a lot” of this recent Yankee stolen base trend is personnel driven.
“We’re as athletic as we’ve been at any time this year or the last several years,” said Boone, with the Yanks recently adding AL stolen base leader Jose Caballero (40 steals, 49 attempts) via trade.
The Yanks will likely need more than the long ball Friday night against Boston right-hander Brayan Bello (9-6, 3.23), opposing veteran lefty Max Fried (13-5, 3.26), with a 6.80 ERA over his last eight starts.
This is a rematch of a June 15 game at Fenway where Bello tossed seven scoreless innings and outdueled Fried in a 2-0 Red Sox win.
