Despite a rough loss last night, the Brewers are still positioned to take two out of three from the Giants if they can come away with a win in today’s rubber match.
Milwaukee will start rookie Chad Patrick, who has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville in favor of Carlos Rodriguez. Today would normally be Brandon Woodruff’s day in the rotation, but Brewers manager Pat Murphy has elected to give him an extra day of rest. Rodriguez allowed five hits and four earned runs (including a three-run home run off the bat of Casey Schmitt) in three innings of relief.
Patrick last pitched for Milwaukee during Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Cubs, giving up five runs (three earned) through five innings while taking the loss. It wasn’t his best start, although he did seem to settle in somewhat after a two-run first inning (due in part to an Andrew Vaughn throwing error) and a third-inning home run off the bat of Willi Castro. Patrick has generally been effective as a Brewer — sporting a 3.61 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 99:32 K:BB over 99.2 innings.
On the hill for San Francisco today is veteran lefty Robbie Ray, who has bounced around the league a bit since making his debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2014. Ray had a few down seasons after winning an AL Cy Young with Toronto in 2021. However, he’s had a renaissance (ray-naissance?) this year, earning his second career All-Star selection. On the season, Ray currently sports a 2.86 ERA (3.75 FIP) across 26 starts.
Brice Turang is back in today’s lineup after missing yesterday’s game. Turang was hit by a pitch on the left wrist Friday night and sat out yesterday due to soreness. He’ll hit sixth today, playing second base as per usual. Sal Frelick leads off, followed by Caleb Durbin in the two-spot. William Contreras (at designated hitter), Christian Yelich, and Andrew Vaughn make up the heart of the order. Danny Jansen is hitting seventh and playing catcher. Brandon Lockridge is in centerfield tonight, batting eighth. Andruw Monasterio is in the nine-hole, playing shortstop again with Joey Ortiz on the IL.
Today’s game will also be preceded by a celebration of life ceremony honoring legendary Brewers announcer Bob Uecker. Fans unable to attend the game can still watch the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on FanDuel Sports Wisconsin and Telemundo Wisconsin starting at noon.
Today’s game will also be broadcast on the Brewers Radio Network in addition to FanDuel Sports Wisconsin and Telemundo Wisconsin. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. CT.
