Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy on team’s Aug. 23 loss to Giants
“We were trying to win tonight, but you have to be health-conscious and you have to use the whole roster.”
After the celebration of life ceremony for legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker, the Milwaukee Brewers will take the field against the San Francisco Giants at American Family Field.
Follow along for live updates as Chad Patrick (3-8, 3.61) takes the mound for Milwaukee against San Francisco’s Robbie Ray (10-6, 2.85).
Brandon Lockridge two-out hit puts Brewers on board
Brandon Lockridge bailed out Brice Turang in the bottom of the second by single home Christian Yelich from third with two outs after the Brewers second baseman tried bunting him in and popped up back to the pitcher.
It was Lockridge’s sixth RBI in his 17th game with the Brewers, surpassing his total in 47 games with the Padres prior to being traded at the deadline.
Luis Matos opens the scoring with a homer
Giants outfielder Luis Matos was hitting .167 with a .559 OPS when he was recalled from Class AAA on Aug. 21 but has done nothing but crush Brewers pitching in this series.
Matos, who was 4 for 7 with a homer and two doubles over the first two games of the weekend against the Brewers, continued his obliteration of Milwaukee’s arms by crushing a two-run home to left-center off Chad Patrick with two outs in the first.
Patrick had struck out four of the first six batters of the game until Wilmer Flores lined a two-out single to right, which Matos followed by sending a cutter to the Brewers bullpen to make it 2-0 in the second.
Robin Yount brings the crowd to its feet
Robin Yount began his time on the microphone with a joke.
He finished it with a fitting poignant-yet-humorous story of Uecker.
Yount, the final person to talk during the ceremony, started talking with his microphone turned upside down, of which he cracked “Bob taught me that.”
After some short comments about Uecker, who famously called his 3,000th career hit and all 20 seasons of his playing career, Yount told the story of what Uecker said to him toward the end of his life.
“I’m not afraid of dying,” Yount recalled Uecker telling him. “I just don’t want to be there when it happens.”
With that, the crowd came to its feet and the on-stage portion of the ceremony concluded, leading into Bob Uecker Jr. throwing the first pitch out to Yount with the team on the field behind him.
Christian Yelich addresses crowd before game
Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich took the stage and spoke during the ceremony. He spoke of the special magic inside his customized “Ueck” bat before wrapping up by saying Uecker is “still with us to some extend and I think we all feel that.”
