A grand slam, and a grand rookie season.

That is how you can best describe Chicago White Sox top prospect, Colson Montgomery, who has hit 12 home runs and had 32 RBIs since the All-Star break, with those 32 RBIs being the second-most by anyone in the American League during that span.

Montgomery has shown flashes of his great potential in spurts since his call up to the majors on July 4. Going 4-for-9 with two multi-hit games, two home runs and six RBIs and his first career grand slam in his last two games, Montgomery’s first career grand slam was a 412-foot blast to right-center with an exit velocity of 106.2 mph, in the second inning of a 7-3 home victory on Saturday. That shows the raw power that he possesses, too.

Though he has shown his great potential with his bat in the White Sox last couple of games, Montgomery still has had the rookie struggles any player goes through, though. He slumped to a 7-for-49 stretch over 14 games prior to this homestand after having raised his average to a pretty respectable .256 by August 3.

Montgomery in a small sample size has played a pretty decent shortstop for the White Sox, too. His .977 fielding percentage with just three errors in 30 games at the position that includes this spectacular overhead catch in his debut back in July:

Montgomery could become the latest in a long line of great shortstops that includes Luis Aparicio, Luke Appling and Ozzie Guillén.

Colson at just 23 is someone the Sox with their current youth movement can easily build around. His fun style is like a lot of the young core, and is something fans have already started to appreciate. And they’ll continue to as long as he continues puts forth such a strong, all-around effort.
