Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 6, Charlotte Knights (White Sox) 4
Cameron Weston threw five innings, allowing three innings, and the Tides pulled off a comeback win by scoring five runs in the last four innings.
Down 3-1 after six innings, TT Bowens homered, Fernando Peguero doubled and scored on an error to tie the game, and Ryan Noda singled in a fourth run before Jud Fabian and Maverick Handley each walked with the bases loaded.
Four relief pitchers combined to hold Charlotte to one run over the last four innings: Josh Walker (acquired off waivers on Aug. 21), Vinny Nittoli, Elvin Rodriguez and Chayce McDermott. In addition to the Bowens, Peguero and Noda hits, catcher Silas Ardoin and José Barrera singled.
Double-A: Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants) 5, Chesapeake Baysox 1
The Baysox’s offense failed to show up for the red-hot Michael Forret, who tossed another gem on Sunday. The 21-year-old righty threw 4.2 scoreless and struck out five. In two starts since getting called up to Chesapeake, Forret hasn’t allowed a run. And dating back to his time with High-A Aberdeen, he hasn’t allowed more than one run in any outing since July 12.
Unfortunately, while relievers Carter Rustad, Carter Baumler and Tyler Neighbors were solid, Jake Lloyd allowed four runs in the seventh, including in a three-run homer. The Baysox’s one run came on a Tavian Josenberger home run. They had two other hits: Douglas Hodo singled and catcher Ethan Anderson doubled.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 3, Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) 1
The main story here is a dominant outing from starting pitcher Sebastian Gongora. The 2024 eleventh-rounder threw six innings and allowed just two hits and one run, while striking out five. Gongora started the season in Delmarva and had a rough July with Aberdeen, but in four of his last five starts he’s allowed one run or less. Not to be overlooked, either, is a stellar three-inning scoreless relief effort from Jack Crowder, a big righty out of U. Illinois.
The Ironbirds scored three runs on just five hits. In the fourth, catcher Colin Tuft tripled and scored on a pinch-hit single by Alfredo Velásquez. Velásquez then stole a base, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh, they scored their third run when outfielder Ryan Stafford singled and scored when the Brooklyn third baseman made a throwing error on a Vance Honeycutt bunt single.
Not a lot of offensive standouts right now at Aberdeen. Velásquez had two hits. Besides the RBI bunt, Honeycutt also struck out three times.
Low-A: Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox) 10, Delmarva Shorebirds 4
Oopsie. This was as dramatic a bullpen meltdown as can be imagined, as the Shorebirds managed to turn a 4-2 lead going into the ninth into a 10-4 loss. Kenny Leiner was woeful, coughing up six runs and only retiring one, and Luis Beltrán, assigned to help, walked four Kannapolis hitters instead.
Pre-meltdown, Delmarva’s starter-by-committee game plan had gone well: Keeler Morfe, Joe Glassey, Denton Biller and Jacob Stretch combined for eight innings of two-run baseball.
The Shorebirds had ten hits in the losing effort. Catcher Caden Bodine had three of them. Colin Yeaman singled twice. Wehiwa Aloy singled and drove in a run. RJ Austin singled and stole two bases. Braylin Tavera singled twice, walked, and scored. Joshua Liranzo walked twice and scored.
