The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to tie Tuesday’s game after having trailed 6-0, but they failed to finish the job against the best team in Major League Baseball.
The Brewers (83-50) walked off the Diamondbacks on a sacrifice fly from Isaac Collins, 9-8, a ball hit too deep for right fielder Corbin Carroll to have any chance at throwing out the runner.
Arizona (64-69) finished with 14 hits, nine of which came in the final three innings. Geraldo Perdomo hit the game-tying double with two outs in the eighth, but Arizona stranded two runners in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Former D-backs pitcher Shelby Miller — traded to Milwaukee alongside Jordan Montgomery for cash considerations to save $3 million — struck out pinch hitter Tyler Locklear to strand runners on the corners in the ninth. Manager Torey Lovullo opted to use the right-handed Locklear in that spot over left-handed bat Adrian Del Castillo against the right-handed Miller.

Juan Morillo entered the bottom of the ninth, and he walked two batters to load the bases with nobody out. Kyle Backhus inherited the jam, and with one out, Collins just got enough of a sinker over the plate.

This particular matchup has been made up of wild finishes.
Tuesday’s comeback in some ways was reminiscent of what Milwaukee did to Arizona 11 months ago in the same setting, when the Brewers came back from down 8-0 on a crushing afternoon for the Diamondbacks’ playoff push.
Arizona scored five runs in the ninth inning to walk off the Brewers at Chase Field back in April.
The Diamondbacks nearly mounted another dramatic comeback on Monday after trailing 6-0, cutting the Milwaukee lead to 6-5 before losing, 7-5.
The resiliency of the Diamondbacks has been prevalent, but it is very hard to win games when the first three innings go as poorly as they have this week in Milwaukee.
Brandon Pfaadt has a tough day in Milwaukee
Since the trade deadline, the Diamondbacks had been playing well in part due to improved starting pitching.
Not this week.
Arizona’s starting pitcher failed to make it out of the third inning for a second straight game, as Brandon Pfaadt allowed six earned runs on eight hits while recording only seven outs. Five Brewers runs scored in the third inning, again for the second straight day. William Contreras hit a two-run home run, and Anthony Siegler doubled in two more.
Jake Woodford came in and provided length.
Pfaadt had pitched very well in Milwaukee last year, throwing seven innings with one run on two hits and 12 strikeouts. Tuesday was a grind from the first inning, as he threw 80 pitches in fewer than three innings.
The Diamondbacks responded quickly when Gabriel Moreno hit a three-run blast in the fourth inning off Brewers All-Star starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski.
Milwaukee kept Arizona at arm’s length until the seventh inning, which it entered with an 8-3 lead. Against the Brewers’ well-regarded bullpen, the D-backs began to chip away.
Perdomo singled in a run, Ketel Marte hit a sacrifice fly and Carroll doubled home another to cut the deficit to two runs.
Pinch hitter James McCann led off the eighth with a double, followed by a Moreno single to set the table. Pinch hitter Ildemaro Vargas brought McCann home with a single up the middle, and Perdomo, after falling behind 0-2, dug out a curveball down and punched it into left-center field for the game-tying RBI.
The Brewers brought in Miller to face his former team, and he struck out Marte on three pitches to end the threat.
The Diamondbacks’ largest comeback of the season entering Tuesday was six runs, and they had chances to secure what would have been among the most remarkable victories of the year.
“If only” have been defining words to describe this season.
