NEW YORK – The last time Cam Schlittler pitched, he was perfect through six innings at Tampa, efficiently zipping through the Rays’ lineup at Steinbrenner Field.
On Monday night, the Yankees’ rookie right-hander draws the Washington Nationals at Yankee Stadium, kicking off a seven-game period where the Yanks face two last-place clubs in the Nats and Chicago White Sox.
Schlittler (1-2, 3.22) wound up with a no-decision against the Rays last Wednesday, yielding just one hit and two walks, with eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings. The Yanks would win it in 10 innings, 6-4.
Right-hander Brad Lord (4-6, 3.46) starts for Washington, facing a Yankees team that leads the majors with 215 home runs this year – including two apiece by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham in Sunday night’s 7-2 series-salvaging win against the Red Sox.
As anticipated, Anthony Volpe is on the bench for a second straight game, with Jose Caballero making his second straight start at shortstop.
Volpe is in an 8-for-66 slide since Aug. 2, with a .413 OPS, but manager Aaron Boone said he plans on starting Volpe at shortstop on Tuesday night.
As for Volpe’s status moving forward, “I view Anthony as our shortstop,” said Boone, calling this two-day rest period from the starting lineup “just a reset” and hopefully “something that serves him well down the stretch.”
Before Monday’s game, Aaron Judge (flexor strain) was out in right field again, this time simulating more game-related throws as he works back toward being an outfield option and not a full-time DH.
Also, reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) is set to be activated for Tuesday’s game, per Boone.
