SP Luis Morales, Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers, $7,000
It’s been quite the season for Morales, a fringe top 100 prospect in MLB coming into 2025. After finishing 2024 in High-A, Morales has made the jump from Double-A to Triple-A to the majors, debuting out of the bullpen for the Athletics back on August 1. Since then, the 22-year-old has made three starts and he’s looked incredible. Morales has allowed just two earned runs over 13.2 innings as a starter, holding opponents to a .149 average and a .226 wOBA. Obviously it’s a small sample, and a .194 BABIP isn’t sustainable, but Morales also carries an intriguing 27.8% strikeout rate within that span. Simply put, the right-hander has a huge fastball and he seems like he belongs. There’s upside here.
Specific to Wednesday’s slate, the Tigers are far from the easiest matchup in the world. However, Detroit’s bats have cooled in the year’s second-half. Since the All-Star break, the Tigers have registered just a 102 wRC+ with a 24.5% strikeout rate that ranks fifth in the league. That’s what prolonged slumps from a trio of All-Stars will do, and it has been a struggle lately for Javier Baez ($3,400), Zach McKinstry ($4,300) and Gleyber Torres ($4,600).
1B Rowdy Tellez, Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels, $2,800
I always miss Jack Kochanowicz ($5,800) so much when he’s gone, but the right-hander has been re-called from Triple-A and will start tonight’s game versus the Rangers. Simply put, Kochanowicz is one of the best pitchers in MLB to stack against. Full stop. The right-hander enters tonight’s action with a 6.19 ERA and a sixth percentile opponent hard hit rate (48.3%). LHBs have truly been Kochanowicz’s kryptonite, as the 24-year-old has surrendered 2.05 opponent home runs per nine within the split. There’s a reason he keeps being removed from the Angels rotation, people.
Meanwhile, Tellez has been sneaky red-hot in the month of August, sporting an .878 OPS and a 144 wRC+ with six extra-base hits in only 47 at-bats. For 2025 as a whole, which includes several games with the Mariners, Tellez has proven to be a high-ceiling asset versus RHPs, as he possesses a .245 ISO in opposite-hand matchups.
OF Nathan Lukes, Toronto Blue Jays vs. Minnesota Twins, $3,700
Toronto’s bullpen has been awful in the first two games of this series against the Twins, but the team has also put up 15 runs. That says a lot about the state of Minnesota’s roster after the trade deadline. On Wednesday, Simeon Woods Richardson ($6,500) will be reinstated from the IL to make his 17th start of 2025. There’s two things you need to know about Woods Richardson. First, he’s struggled to a massive degree on the road this season, posting a 5.30 ERA within the split and surrendering 1.77 opponent home runs per nine. Second, he’s also had his issues with LHBs, allowing those within the split to hit .293 with a .354 wOBA. That’s where Lukes comes into play.
The journeyman outfielder’s numbers won’t blow you away, yet in the 437 plate appearances that Lukes has taken since the beginning of 2024, he’s hit .267 with a 114 wRC+ and he’s walked (44) nearly as often as he’s struck out (52). He’s a solid asset and he certainly gains some value from the fact that’s he’s been hitting second in the Jays’ lineup against RHPs. Batting between George Springer ($5,000) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ($5,200) is a good method to pick up some fantasy points.
